ESG and Sustainability: Lunch and learn with 3P Impact

🌱 What motivates meaningful sustainability in projects? 🌱

That was the powerful question at the heart of today's PMI Lunch & Learn with Alan Taylor of 3P Impact. Participants explored ESG and sustainability through the lens of people, culture, and governance.

Here are some key takeaways from the session (courtesy of Skye Bennett):

🌱 Sustainability is everyone's business. More than 90% of employees in one UK study wanted to be part of sustainability conversations—but weren't given the opportunity. That's a missed opportunity for innovation and engagement.

🌱 Intrinsic motivation drives better outcomes. Research shows organisations that tap into people's internal drivers see 22% higher profitability and 40% better retention. When genuinely invested, people stay, contribute more, and build trust.

🌱 We explored impact via a case study organisation. After being confronted with the environmental impact of their operations, their CEO sparked a transformation that reduced waste, saved US$400M, and helped the company achieve carbon neutrality ahead of schedule. Why? Because employees were invited to participate in the solution.

🌱 We also explored the power of coaching as a lever for meaningful transformation, particularly in ESG and sustainability work. Swedish research into the Inner Development Goals suggests we're falling short of the UN SDGs not because we lack knowledge but because the human factor—like empowerment, self-awareness, and systems thinking—isn't being addressed.

Trust, purpose, and autonomy matter. ESG goals can't be delivered top-down alone. They need open dialogue, cross-functional ownership, and cultures where people feel safe speaking up and contributing.
